For the purposes of CMC § 13.04.470 through § 13.04.540, the following words and phrases shall be construed as defined in this section.
A. "Approved protective device"
for purposes of this Article X shall mean a protective device of a design and manufacture approved by this City which has been tested and has proved to operate in the manner intended to protect the municipal water supply.
B. A "cross-connection"
shall mean any unprotected actual or potential connection or structural arrangement between a public or a consumer's potable water system and any other source or system through which it is possible to introduce into any part of the potable system any used water, industrial fluid, gas, or substance other than the intended potable water with which the system is supplied. By-pass arrangements, jumper connections, removable sections, swivel or change-over devices and other temporary or permanent devices through which or because of which "backflow" can or may occur are considered to be cross-connections.
C. "Auxiliary supply"
shall mean any water supply on or available to the premises other than the public water supply.
D. "Approved double check valve assembly"
shall mean an assembly of at least two independently acting check valves including tightly closing shutoff valves on each side of the check valve assembly and suitable leak-detector drains plus connections available for testing the water tightness of each check valve, the manufacturer and operation of which have been approved by the City.
E. "Airgap separation"
shall mean a physical break between a supply pipe and receiving vessel. The airgap shall be at least double the diameter of the supply pipe, measured vertically above the top rim of the vessel, in no case less than one inch.
F. "Approved reduced pressure principle backflow prevention device"
shall mean a device incorporating two or more check valves and an automatically operating differential release valve located between the two checks, two shutoff valves and equipped with necessary appurtenances for testing, the manufacture and operation of which have been approved by the City. The device shall operate to maintain the pressure in the zone between the two check valves, less than the pressure on the public water supply side of the device. To be approved these devices must be readily accessible for maintenance and testing and installed in a location where no part of the valve will be submerged.
