Except as hereinafter provided, Title 10, Animals, of the Los Angeles County Code, as amended and in effect on July 1, 1992, is hereby adopted by reference as the animal control ordinance of the city of South Gate.
A copy of the animal control ordinance has been deposited in the office of the city clerk of the city and shall be at all times maintained by the city clerk for use and examination by the public.

Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 7.22.010, Section 10.86.010 of the animal control ordinance is amended to read as follows:
10.86.010 Interference with dogs utilized by police department prohibited. It is unlawful for any person to willfully tease, taunt, torment, strike, kick, mutilate, disable, distract, or otherwise injure, or kill, or to interfere with the function of any dog while such animal is being utilized by the police department, or any officer or employee thereof, in the performance of any function or duty of said department, or of such officer or employee.

Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 7.22.010, Chapter 10.76 (Apiaries) of the animal control ordinance is amended to read as follows:

No person shall maintain an apiary nor keep or permit the keeping of bees within the city.

Penalty for violations—Each day as separate offense.
Any person who maintains keeping of bees on any premises in the city shall be guilty of a separate offense for each and every day or portion thereof during which any violation of any of the provisions of this section is committed, continued, or permitted, and upon conviction thereof shall be punishable by (A) a fine not exceeding the hundred dollars ($100.00) for a first violation; (B) a fine not exceeding two hundred dollars ($200.00) for a second violation of the same section within one year; (C) a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars ($500.00) for each additional violation of the same section within one year.

Notwithstanding the provisions of Sections 7.22.010, 10.28.060, 10.28.070 and 10.28.080 of the animal control ordinance are amended to read as follows:
10.28.060 License—Required for certain activities—Certain animals exempt. No person shall, without first obtaining a license therefor from the tax collector, conduct or operate any dog kennel, cat kennel, pet shop, grooming parlor, animal menagerie, or animal dealership, or keep any wild animal, except that a wild animal license is not required for:
1.
Not to exceed two hen chickens.
2.
Not to exceed two rabbits.
3.
Not to exceed four combined total of rabbits and hen chickens.
4.
Not to exceed four cats and eight young thereof up to four months in age.
5.
Not to exceed four dogs and eight young thereof up to four months in age.
6.
Not to exceed two ducks.
7.
Not to exceed eight small birds or fowl such as canaries, song birds, pigeons, white doves, and birds or fowl of a general like character.
8.
Not to exceed two parrots, parakeets, amazons, cockatiels, cockatoos, lories, lorikeets, love birds, macaws, and similar birds of the psittacine family.
9.
Not to exceed two mynah birds, caverns, steppe legal eagles or toucans.
10.
Not to exceed four small animals such as squirrels, chipmunks, hamsters, caged mice, caged rats, guinea pigs, and other animals of a general like character.
11.
Not to exceed two chinchillas, Marmoset monkeys, squirrel monkeys and other animals of a general like character.
12.
Not to exceed four painted turtles.
13.
Not to exceed three nonpoisonous lizards, snakes, and other nonpoisonous reptiles, or any combination thereof. No such reptile shall exceed thirty-six inches length.
14.
Horses, colts, or ponies, the total number of which shall not exceed the total number of structural stall spaces which exist on the property as of May 22, 1986, and the number of which spaces have been registered with the director of building not later than July 22, 1986 on the condition that the properties on which they are located are accessible to a county or state designated horse riding trail without crossing a public street or highway.
10.28.070 Distance and enclosure requirements. Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 10.28.060, the following requirements shall be applicable:

All fowl and animals referred to under subparagraphs 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 of Section 10.28.060 shall, where practicable, be kept in an enclosure distant at least ten feet from each property line and distant at least thirty-five feet from any school, church, public building or hospital and from any door, window, or other opening in any adjacent building which is designed, intended or used for residential purposes.
2.
All animals referred to in subparagraph 14 of Section 10.28.060 shall be kept, when not in use, in one of the stall spaces, and the property shall be kept in a clean and healthy condition, as determined by the zoning enforcement officer of the city.
10.28.080 Keeping of roosters prohibited. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained herein, including the licensing procedure, roosters are not permitted within the city limits except temporarily in an authorized animal control shelter.

Notwithstanding the provisions of Title 10 (Animals) of the Los Angeles County Code, the city council may request, by written resolution, that animals impounded under the city's animal control ordinance shall not be sold for medical research, and upon such request, the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Control shall not sell such animals for medical research.

(a) 
Any person, firm, company or corporation violating any of the provisions of this chapter is guilty of an infraction and each such person, firm, company, or corporation shall be deemed guilty of a separate offense for each and every day or portion thereof during which any violation of any of the provisions of this chapter is committed, continued, or permitted, and upon conviction thereof shall be punishable by (A) a fine not exceeding one hundred dollars for a first violation; (B) a fine not exceeding two hundred dollars for a second violation of the same chapter within one year; (C) a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars for each additional violation of the same chapter within one year.
(b) 
Any person violating any of the following sections, or violating any of the chapters or provisions referenced in the following sections, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not exceeding one thousand dollars or by imprisonment in the county jail for a period not exceeding six months, or by both such fine and imprisonment:
