There shall be a uniform system of numbering all houses, streets and other buildings, except sheds and outbuildings, erected or to be erected within the city limits, by placing on the door or door frame of the main entrance to the building, or as near thereto as practicable, the number assigned thereto as hereinafter provided. Such numbers shall be painted on the building, or on wood, metal or glass, or a wooden or metallic figure may be used, at the option of the owner, and so placed and of a contrasting color to the building as to be readily seen from the street. The figures designating the numbers, whether painted or otherwise, shall be not less than two and one-half inches in width and three inches in height. The designating figures for all commercial buildings and commercial establishments shall not be less than two and one-half inches in width and four inches in height.
