The purpose of this chapter is to establish regulations for the installation and maintenance of emergency shut-off mechanisms at electric vehicle charging stations within the Township. This chapter aims to protect the safety of emergency responders and the general public during emergency situations involving electric vehicles. The requirements of this chapter do not apply to a charging station installed at a residential home.

A vehicle that is powered by an electric motor and uses rechargeable batteries.
A device that allows for the immediate disconnection of power to an electric vehicle charging station in case of an emergency.
A.
Installation of emergency shut-offs. All new and existing electric vehicle charging stations within the Township must be equipped with an accessible emergency shut-off mechanism.

Location of shut-offs: An emergency disconnect device shall be approved by the Township's Fire Code Official and shall be installed a minimum of 25 feet from the EVCS. It shall shut off all electrical power to the associated EVCS(s).

Sign. Each charging station must display clear signage indicating the location of the emergency shut- off device. The emergency disconnect switch shall contain a readily legible sign that provides "Fire Department Use Only - Electric Vehicle Charger Shut-off."

An emergency disconnect: A KNOX Remote Power Box or similar power disconnect device approved by the Fire Code Official is the preferred method for disconnecting the power.

Regular inspections: The Township will conduct regular inspections of all electric vehicle charging stations to ensure compliance with this chapter.
B.
Maintenance responsibility. The owner or operator of the charging station is responsible for the maintenance and functionality of the emergency shut-off device. Any malfunctioning device must be repaired and reported to the Township within 24 hours.
A.
Penalties for noncompliance: Any violation of this chapter shall be punishable by a fine not to exceed $100 per day for each violation. Each day that a violation exists shall be deemed a separate violation.
B.
Reporting violations: Any individual may report violations of this chapter to the Township authorities for investigation and enforcement.
