C.
Fences. Contributing properties should try to match new fences to existing fences on the property. For contributing properties without fences or for non-contributing properties, new fences should be in any of the styles consistent with the date range of the district:
(1)
Split rail.
(a)
These are examples of split rail fence, with different materials. Note that the cementitious board (right most image above) has wood graining. These would be good choices for contributing and non-contributing properties alike.
(b)
These vinyl fences, without the faux grain patterns, are generally only acceptable for non-contributing properties, or for backyard fences visible from the street for contributing properties.
(2)
Picket.
(a)
These are examples of picket fences of different styles built with historic materials or modern materials, such as cementitious boards, made to look like historic materials. These would be good choices for contributing and non-contributing properties alike.
(b)
These vinyl picket fences are generally only acceptable for non-contributing properties, or for backyard fences visible from the street for contributing properties.
(3)
Plank board (vertical).
(a)
Vertical plank and stockade fences were traditionally made of wood and had different styles. These would be good choices for contributing and non-contributing properties alike.
(b)
Vertical plank and stockade fences made from vinyl or other faux materials are generally only acceptable for non-contributing properties, or for backyard fences visible from the street for contributing properties. Some modern materials, like composite wood planks, can do a good job of mimicking wood and could also be used for contributing and non-contributing properties alike.
(4)
Plank board (horizontal).
(a)
Horizontal plank stockade fences were traditionally made of wood and had different styles. These would be good choices for contributing and non-contributing properties alike.
(b)
Horizontal plank stockade fences made from vinyl or other faux materials are generally only acceptable for non-contributing properties, or for backyard fences visible from the street for contributing properties.
D.
Sheds.
(1)
Contributing properties should try to find sheds that match or are consistent with the architectural style of the historically designated or historically eligible structure. Non-contributing properties should try to find sheds that are consistent with any of the architectural styles in the district, as listed in Subsection A above.
(a)
Wood, wood panel, cementitious boards, or other faux grain materials are acceptable for contributing and non-contributing properties alike, especially when in the same architectural style of the main structure or in an agricultural style, such as a barn.
(b)
Vinyl sheds, vertical metal seam, or other similar modern siding is acceptable for non-contributing properties as long as the style still matches the architectural style of the house or has an agricultural out-building appearance.
(c)
Corrugated metal, sheds cobbled together from multiple materials, or painted in garish colors are not acceptable for any property within the district.
E.
Driveways. For non-contributing properties, driveways must be paved in either asphalt or concrete, per the driveway standards found on the Town Website in the "Details" section under Engineering & Planning: https://www.henriettany.gov/engineering/page/roadway-details. For contributing properties, stone driveways are also allowed as long as they are at least 8" thick compacted stone and/or crusher run and as long as the portion of the driveway in the right-of-way (the apron) is paved with either asphalt or concrete.
F.
Windows and doors.
(1)
Whenever possible, contributing properties should try to repair the existing windows and doors on the historic homes. When repair of the existing windows and doors is not feasible or practicable, then efforts should be made to find windows and doors that are consistent with the architectural style of the home. The Historic Site Committee is happy to meet with homeowners to provide assistance in the selection of replacement windows and doors, when needed.
(2)
Non-contributing properties should try to avoid windows or doors that are going to clash with the overall historic aesthetic of the neighborhood. This still allows a wide range of selections for potential windows and doors.
