The chief of police shall, at least once a year and as often as he may deem advisable, cause to be sold at public auction to the highest bidder for cash, all property which comes into the possession of the police department by being taken from persons arrested for crime, or which may be found, and which remains unclaimed by any person or persons entitled thereto for a period of not less than six months after the same has come into the possession of the department, and shall cause the proceeds of such sale to be paid into the city treasury.
