Courts shall be provided, as required by this
article, in connection with any building hereafter erected in any
Residence C District or business district and in connection with any
addition hereafter made to any building in any such district.

An open space in the form of an inner court
or outer court shall be provided, in connection with any building
in any Residence C District or business district, wherever any room
therein, in which a person or persons live, work, sleep or congregate,
cannot be adequately lighted and ventilated from the street or yard.
Such court shall be adjacent to such room, the windows of which shall
open on such court.
The least horizontal dimension of an inner court
at its lowest level shall be not less than eight inches per foot of
height of the highest portion of the adjoining walls of the building
above the top of the sills of the windows in the lowest floor facing
on the court. The maximum horizontal dimension of an inner court shall
be not less than twice the minimum that its least horizontal dimension
is so required to be.
The minimum width of an outer court shall be
not less than six inches per foot of height of the highest portion
of the adjoining walls of the building above the top of the sills
of the windows in the lowest floor facing on the court and in no case
less than 10 feet. The maximum horizontal dimension of such court
shall not exceed twice its width.
There shall be no window in a wall in a court
which is distant less than 12 feet from any opposite wall.
No cornice, belt course or other projection
shall extend more than six inches into any required court.
This article shall not be deemed to require
a court in connection with any bathroom, toilet compartment, hallway
or stairway which is adequately lighted and ventilated in accordance
with this Code.
