Tours of duty, time of reporting, special assignments, changes of assignment and all details in connection with the time and circumstances of duties shall be as directed by the Chief and as provided in the rules and regulations.
A.
Unless otherwise ordered by the Manager, regular tours of duty in the Department shall consist of eight hours in a twenty-four-hour period.
B.
Extra duty.
(1)
Any member of the Department may request extra duty in addition to his or her regular tours of duty. Whenever the Chief finds that the needs of the Department are such as to require the assignment of a member or members of the Department to extra duty, he or she may, in his or her discretion, assign such extra duty to such member or members of the Department who have so requested extra duty; provided, however, that in no case shall the days of employment of any uniformed member exceed six days in any one week, except in the case of an emergency.
(2)
Any member of the Department who shall perform extra duty under this section shall receive compensation therefor at his or her regular rate of salary, prorated. The performance of such extra duty shall not entitle any member to credit on account of sick leave or days off.
C.
The provisions of this section shall not be applicable to any emergency or to the recall of any member of the Department during the period of such emergency.
Members of the Department may be assigned to duty with the Detective Bureau, Record Bureau, traffic squad or other detail, and they may be reassigned to other duty, as the best interests of the Department may require.
In the absence of officers in charge of any command, other officers or senior patrolman shall be designated to perform their duties.
Members of the Department shall normally be used in the regular service; provided, however, that the Chief, whenever in his or her opinion the public welfare requires it, may detail any member of the Department for any special or particular duty connected with the police service of the Township.
All members of the Department, while off duty, shall be subject to recall to duty in times of emergency by direction of the Chief.
Subject to the authority of the head of each department of the Township to investigate violations of any ordinance within his or her jurisdiction and to cause prosecutions thereof, the Police Department shall cooperate with such department head in such investigation and prosecution to the fullest extent, to the end that a fair and complete hearing on the case may be had. The Police Department and every member thereof shall assist the other Township departments in all other ways not inconsistent with their police duties.
Members of the Department shall not engage in any business or occupation which may divert their attention from police service or handicap or render them unable to perform the duties required of them.
Members of the Department shall be responsible for the safekeeping and humane treatment of prisoners in their custody or under their supervision. Prisoners shall be maintained and regulated as prescribed in the rules and regulations.
All goods and chattels other than motor vehicles which shall come into the possession of the Police Department by finding or by being recovered after theft or robbery and which shall remain in the possession of the Department for six months, and all motor vehicles which similarly shall come into and remain in the possession of the Department for three months, and the owner or owners of which are unknown and cannot be found or refuse to receive such goods or chattels or motor vehicles, may, in whole or in part, be exposed for sale by the Township Council at public auction in a public place after notice of the sale shall have been published in a newspaper circulating in the Township. Goods and chattels of a perishable nature so held may be sold as promptly as may be necessary to avoid loss. All moneys received from the sale of any goods and chattels shall be paid into the treasury of the Township. All unclaimed moneys coming into the possession of the Police Department shall, after six months, be paid into the treasury.
