The Town Board of the Town of Cortlandt has determined that there are
certain road intersections in the Town of Cortlandt wherein students, on their
way to and from school, would be in need of adult supervision and assistance
in either waiting at those intersections or in crossing those intersections.
The Town Board further determines that it is in the interest of the people
of the Town of Cortlandt that school crossing guards be placed at certain
intersections throughout the town for the health, welfare and safety of the
school-age children of the Town of Cortlandt.
There is hereby established in the Town of Cortlandt the position of
school crossing guard. All school crossing guards appointed by the Town Board
in accordance with this chapter shall have the authority to control traffic
at the intersections of town roads and to assist school-age children in crossing
those intersections and also in awaiting the arrival of school buses at any
intersections at any town roads in the Town of Cortlandt.
Any school crossing guard appointed herein shall be under the supervision
of the Chief of Police of the Town of Cortlandt. The Chief of Police shall
set the schedules of said school crossing guards and shall provide the school
crossing guards with the requisite training necessary for them to properly
fulfill their positions. The Chief of Police is hereby empowered to promulgate
such rules and regulations with respect to school crossing guards as may be
necessary.
All school crossing guards as herein appointed shall have the full authority
to control traffic at the intersection of any town roads in the Town of Cortlandt.
Said authority shall be to stop all traffic to allow for the crossing of children
at said intersections. All vehicles, when so directed by school crossing guards,
shall stop upon their lawful direction.
