The number of Justices of the Peace shall be a total of twenty-four
(24) for the town, selected as follows:
A. An equal number of two-thirds (2/3) of the total Justices
of the Peace shall be nominated by each political party, which is a major
party, as defined by C.G.S.§ 9-372(5)(B). If the number to be nominated
is not even, a public lottery will be held by the Registrar of Voters to determine
which political party will nominate the extra Justice of the Peace.
B. Twenty percent (20%) of the total number of Justices
of the Peace shall be nominated by each political party, which is a major
party, as defined in C.G.S. § 9-372(5)(A), but not Subparagraph
(B) of said subdivision. Said percentage shall be rounded down to the nearest
whole number.
C. One-third (1/3) of the total number of Justices of the Peace, or one-third (1/3) of the total number of Justices less the number of Justices of the Peace selected under Subsection
B above, shall be appointed by the Town Clerk, pursuant to C.G.S. § 9-184c. Each elector must not be a member of a major party, as defined in C.G.S. § 9-372, and must submit a written application to the Town Clerk between August 1 and November 1, inclusive, in such year. No person having enrollment privileges in a major political party within the three (3) months prior to August 1 and ending on the date the person is to be appointed shall be eligible for such appointment.
