This chapter shall be referred to as "Flags."
The purpose of the provisions of this chapter is to recognize the passing
of law enforcement officers, firefighters and ambulance/rescue squad members,
emergency medical technicians and paramedics that either work or volunteer
for such services in the Township of Medford or reside in the Township of
Medford and provide such services, so as to honor same; as well as the passing
of serving or honorably discharged military veterans who engaged in a combat
theater, as approved by the United States Department of Defense, who either
worked for the Township of Medford at the time of their passing or resided
in the Township of Medford at the time of their passing, so as to honor same.
A.
The Township Council, upon timely notification and verification
of the death of a federal, state or local law enforcement officer, firefighter,
ambulance/rescue squad member, emergency medical technician or paramedic who
either works or volunteers in the municipality providing such services, or
is a resident of the Township of Medford, who dies in the line of duty or
during the time of active service, or a military veteran who engaged in a
combat theater, as approved by the United States Department of Defense, who
either works for the Township of Medford or resides in the Township of Medford,
shall direct that the United States Flag, New Jersey State Flag and the Medford
Township Flag be flown at half-staff at the Medford Township Public Safety
Building for a period of three days from the date of notification and verification.
Said notification shall be made at the time of death, but in no event later
than one week after interment.
B.
Such timely notification and verification shall be provided
by the family of the deceased, indicating their desire to have the flag flown
at half-staff.
C.
In flying the flags at half-staff, the flags should be
first raised to their respective peaks, and then lowered to half-staff position.
D.
Council shall forward a commemoration of the honor of
the flying of the flags at half-staff to the immediate family of the deceased.
