The Board of the Village of Canastota has determined that it is cost-effective
and desirable to the residents of the Village that the terms of its elected
officials be four years. Village elections over the last 10 or more years
have had little or no contest and incumbents have been unopposed. At the same
time, the expense of holding annual elections has been increasing. The cost
of annual elections, where there has been no contest, is deemed to be a needless
expenditure of taxpayer money.
Pursuant to Village Law § 3-302(5)(a), except as stated in §
3-4 hereof, the terms of office for the Mayor and Trustees of the Village of Canastota elected hereafter shall be four years.
Except for Trustees and the Mayor whose terms expire in 2005, pursuant
to Village Law § 3-302(7)(a), Village general elections shall be
conducted biennially in even-numbered years hereafter.
Pursuant to Village Law § 3-302(7)(b), the initial terms of
Trustees and the Mayor whose terms expire in 2005 shall be for three years,
but their successors shall thereafter be elected for terms of four years.
Pursuant to Village Law § 3-302(5)(a) and (7)(a), this chapter
is subject to permissive referendum.
