[HISTORY: Adopted by the Mayor and Council of the Borough of Dunellen 5-15-1978. Amendments noted where applicable.]
Effective with the passage of this chapter, the owners of all rented dwellings being used to house one or more family units in the Borough of Dunellen shall be required to install at least one smoke detector on each floor of said dwelling. This chapter will apply to but not be limited to single rented quarters, boardinghouses, hotels and two-or-more-family dwellings. Said smoke detectors shall be required to be in working order.
As used in this chapter, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated:
DETECTOR
An instrument approved by Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. for the detection of combustion products. The detector shall be of the type operated by battery or electricity on a specific circuit.
A minimum of one detector shall be required on each level containing sleeping quarters. Alarm signaling devices shall be clearly audible in all bedrooms when all intervening doors are closed.
The installation, location and number of said units shall be subject to the inspection, recommendations and approval of the Fire Prevention Bureau of the Borough of Dunellen, which Bureau shall also control the enforcement of this chapter.
It shall be the sole responsibility of the owner to install said smoke detectors and maintain them in proper working order.
Failure to comply with this chapter will result in a fine for the first offense not to exceed $100 and a fine for the second offense not to exceed $200.
