An auxiliary police force is hereby established
as hereinafter set forth.
The County Sheriff is hereby authorized to appoint
auxiliary police officers as he deems necessary, not to exceed the
number of regular full-time deputies authorized for his department.
The County Sheriff, with the approval of the
Board of Supervisors, shall establish rules and regulations concerning
the operation of the auxiliary police force, including their uniforms,
arms and equipment and training.
Persons appointed to the auxiliary police force
shall be of good character. Their appointment shall be revocable at
any time by the Sheriff or upon a majority vote of the Board of Supervisors.
[Amended 9-23-1997 by Ord. No. 97-7]
The auxiliary police force may be called into
service as deemed necessary by the Sheriff or, such as in times of
public emergencies, when requested by the County Director of Emergency
Services. Said force may also be called into service at such times
as there are insufficient numbers of regular Sheriff deputies to preserve
the peace, safety and good order of the county and at any time for
the purpose of training.
When called into service, the auxiliary police
shall wear the prescribed uniform and shall have all the powers and
authority and all the immunities of constables at common law.
Persons appointed to the auxiliary police force
shall serve without compensation. The force may be permitted to conduct
certain fundraising activities for the mutual benefit of said force.
