The position of Fire Safety Official is hereby created to administer, enforce and implement the Uniform Fire Safety Code.[1]

A. 
The Fire Safety Official shall be responsible for compliance with the Uniform Fire Code and shall administer and enforce all aspects of the Uniform Fire Safety Act (N.J.S.A. 52:27D-192 et seq.) within the City of Garfield.
B. 
Such official shall be at least 25 years of age, shall be of good moral character, shall be a present or past member of the Garfield Fire Department and shall submit to a Police Department investigation of background character, which investigation shall be available to the appointing authority.
C. 
Such Official shall be certified by the Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs pursuant to the Uniform Fire Safety Act and its regulations and shall otherwise have sufficient training and education.
The compensation of the Fire Safety Official shall be fixed by the City Council in the Annual Salary Ordinance. [2]

The certified Fire Inspector shall serve for a term of three years as fixed by the City Council, commencing with a ninety-day probationary term. Said term shall be automatically renewed for continuous service unless the City Manager shall otherwise indicate.
