The Building Inspector shall have authority
to permit the use of Village street surfaces for the temporary storage
of materials during building operations, but in no case shall more
than 1/3 of the width of the street between curbs, nor more than 1/2
of the width of the existing sidewalk, be so occupied.
Whenever any building or part thereof within
five feet of a building line is to be erected or raised to exceed
40 feet in height or whenever such building more than 40 feet in height
is to be demolished or whenever, in the discretion of the Building
Inspector, the public safety requires it, the owner or the person
doing or causing such work to be done shall erect and maintain during
such work a substantial shed over the sidewalk in front of such building,
extending, so far as practicable, from the building line to the curb.
Such shed shall remain in place until the building is enclosed or,
in case of demolition, until the building has been reduced to 20 feet
in height. Every such shed shall be kept properly lighted at night.
In any building operation that does not require
sidewalk sheds, the Building Inspector may order a temporary fence
placed, and the owner or person doing such work shall erect and maintain
the same in front of the building during such building operation.
The fence shall be of a substantial character to give proper protection
to the public.
