The Chief of Police is responsible for the general direction, control
and supervision of the Police Department as authorized and provided for by
statute, ordinance and these rules.
The Patrol Division is responsible for the performance of the following
functions:
A. Preventive patrol activities.
B. Protection of life and property, preservation of the
peace, enforcement of the law and suppression of crime.
C. Investigation of police incidents and minor crimes and
preliminary investigation of serious crimes.
D. Traffic law enforcement, traffic control and traffic
accident investigation.
E. Assignment, control deployment, training and supervision
of special police officers and school crossing guards.

The Investigation Division is responsible for the following functions:
A. Follow-up investigations of serious crimes, vice crimes,
fatal motor vehicle accidents and narcotics investigations.

B. Assistance in preparation of cases for prosecution.
C. Recovery of stolen property.
D. Assistance in performance of identification functions.
E. Prevention and control of juvenile delinquency.
F. Assistance in processing of juvenile offenders.
G. Maintaining liaison with the juvenile offenders.
H. Handling and security of evidence.

I. Assist in internal investigations as directed.

The Communications Officer is responsible for the following:
B. Giving out police information to as well as receiving
police information from other districts on the local band concerning stolen
cars, missing persons, pick-up and holds, hit-and-runs, etc.
C. Taking complaints from citizens (informal).
D. Maintaining daily typewritten and computer generated
reports.
E. Sending for and entering NCIC and SCIC lookups on vehicles,
persons and property.
F. Recording all Federal Communications Commission radio
logs.
G. Receiving 911 calls and appropriately dispatching emergency
services.
H. Operating computers and inputting appropriate data.
I. All other duties as required in accordance with the Somers
Point Police Department Communications Standard Operating Procedures Manual.
Duties and responsibilities are not limited to those listed herein.
Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned as necessary to accomplish
the objectives of the Department.
