A. 
The use of portable kerosene heating units is permitted only as a supplement to the central heating system in single-family, twin or half double residential units and in multiple-dwelling-unit complexes (i.e., townhouses) in which the individual units are separated by approved fire walls.
B. 
The use of portable kerosene heating units is not permitted in apartment houses, multiple dwellings with two (2) or more dwelling units, boardinghouses, motels or hotels.
C. 
Commercial establishments, industrial establishments or public offices.
(1) 
The use of portable kerosene heating units is not permitted in commercial establishments, industrial establishments or public offices, except as permitted herein.
(2) 
Portable kerosene heating units may be used in commercial establishments, industrial establishments and public offices, provided that:
(a) 
The portable kerosene heating unit is surrounded by a one-half-inch-square wire mesh frame which will prevent persons from coming into contact with the portable kerosene heating unit.
(b) 
There shall be a minimum clearance of six (6) inches between the kerosene heating unit and the wire mesh frame protection screen.
(c) 
All protection material shall be noncombustible.
D. 
The use of portable kerosene heating units is prohibited in places of public assembly, schools, churches, amusement establishments and all other institutions where public meetings are held or the public assembles.
E. 
The use of portable kerosene heating units is prohibited in structures where hazardous or highly flammable materials are stored, as defined in the BOCA Fire Prevention Code/1990.[1]

All containers used for outdoor storage of kerosene shall be constructed of materials and equipment approved under Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc., regulations or Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal Regulations. These containers shall be labeled "kerosene" with letters at least two (2) inches high. A maximum of ten (10) gallons of kerosene shall be stored in a building, subject to the regulations contained herein, and such storage place must be at least ten (10) feet distant from any permanent heating unit, boiler, furnace or wood-burning stove or portable kerosene heating unit. The storage container must be deemed not to be a hazardous area by the Borough of Norristown Fire Marshal, Building Inspector, Health Officer or Housing Inspector. The storage of kerosene is prohibited in kitchens, bathrooms, closets, bedrooms, hallways or in any room that does not have adequate ventilation.
These regulations are to supplement applicable regulations of the BOCA Fire Prevention Code/1990 and shall supplement but shall not supersede all applicable regulations issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal's office.

Any person who shall violate any of the provisions of this chapter or who shall fail to comply with any order of the Borough of Norristown Fire Marshal, Building Inspector, Health Officer or Housing Inspector shall be guilty of a summary offense, punishable by a fine of not less than fifty dollars ($50.) nor more than one thousand dollars ($1,000.), plus costs of prosecution, or shall undergo imprisonment for a term not to exceed thirty (30) days if said fine and costs shall not be paid. Each day that a violation under this chapter continues is and shall constitute a separate violation of this chapter.
