Any prisoner who may be confined to the county jail as an adult
under sentence imposed by any court of lawful jurisdiction may be
required to perform labor on municipal or county streets or property
under the supervision of the governing body of the municipality or
the appropriate county agency or department. The officer or other
person having such prisoners in charge shall be responsible for the
safekeeping and transportation of such prisoners to and from the county
jail. No prisoner shall be required to perform such labor whose health,
in the opinion of the jail physician, is not in a condition to perform
the same, and no prisoner shall be required to perform such labor
for more than eight hours each day. Each prisoner satisfactorily performing
such labor shall be entitled to receive one dollar per day from the
county for said labor.
