The following shall be the requirements to be met by applicants
for the position of police officer in the Town:
(1) Age. The applicant will be at least 21 years of age at the time of
appointment.

(2) Physical and psychological condition. The applicant must pass a physical
examination given by a qualified doctor of medicine the requirements
of which examination would qualify the applicant for membership in
the armed services of the United States, and satisfactorily pass a
psychological test administered by a certified Psychological Testing
Service.
(3) Education. The applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent,
or have either two years of active military service, or four years
of military reserve, with an honorable discharge as applicable.

(4) Probationary status and permanent appointment.
a. The original appointment as police officer shall be for a probationary
period of 12 months provided, however, the probationary period may
be extended for a period not to exceed 12 months upon recommendation
of the chief to the Mayor. Prior to this probationary period the appointee
must have satisfactorily completed the training course conducted at
the state municipal police training academy.
b. During such training course and probationary period, any appointee
may be removed by the Mayor upon recommendation of the Chief of Police
without cause. Subsequent to the satisfactory completion of the probationary
period, the permanent appointment to the police department shall be
made by the Mayor upon recommendation of the chief.
(5) Qualifying tests.
a. The Chief of Police shall be responsible for the establishing of
such qualifying tests that he deems necessary for applicants for the
position of police officer in order to qualify and be considered for
appointment as a police officer with the Town.
b. The Chief of Police shall establish and prepare such qualifying tests
under the supervision of the Town Council, which shall have the power
to review the tests upon request and which may order the revision
of any such tests when it deems the action appropriate. Such tests
shall consist of written examination, physical agility testing, oral
board examination, drug screening, and psychological examination.
c. Any current list of applicants which has been compiled and consists
of those individuals who have satisfactorily passed a qualifying test
established by the Chief of Police under the supervision of the Town
Council, substantially equivalent to the qualifying tests established
hereby, may be used by the Chief of Police to recommend candidates
to the Mayor for the appointment to the office of police officer.

The Chief of Police is authorized and empowered to prepare and
establish such qualifying examination as is deemed necessary and appropriate
for the rank of commander and to administer the examination to such
personnel who meet the qualifying requirements for promotion to the
rank of commander, as established by the Chief of Police. Any such
examination is subject to review by the Town Council at its request.
