Section 346.57(4), Wis. Stats., limits vehicular speeds to no
more than 15 miles per hour in a school zone when children are present
unless indicated by official traffic signs. The State Department of
Transportation authorizes speed limits of up to 20 miles per hour
in school zones, especially in rural areas where there is a demonstrated
absence of danger to children due to distance or physical segregation
from the roadway. This article is designed to promote a more orderly
flow of traffic and lessen a burden on law enforcement while still
protecting school children.
The effective date of this article in any vicinity shall be
upon the erection of such signs posting a speed limit of 20 miles
per hour. Copies of this article shall be provided to all law enforcement
departments having jurisdiction in Adams County.
Nothing in this article shall be construed to contravene or
to modify existing penalties in regards to vehicles travelling in
excess of posted speeds.
