Spent sharps generated in noncommercial, primarily residential
settings can cause serious problems to solid waste and janitorial
workers. See attached DEP policy.
The purpose of this regulation is to provide safe collection
and disposal of sharps generated in South Hadley by noncommercial
users.
In accordance with the attached DEP policy, the DPW Solid Waste Coordinator and staff, in coordination
with other Town of South Hadley agencies such as the Board of Health
and Council on Aging, will provide collection and disposal of medical
sharps.
Each Town of South Hadley residential user of sharps will be
provided with an approved sharps container free of charge. When full,
these containers may be brought to the DPW or other participating
location and exchanged for an empty approved sharps container. The
full containers will be aggregated and shipped under a written agreement
with an approved medical waste hauler, all in accordance with the
attached DEP policy.
