In case of a vacancy or announced departure of a person in the
fire chief's position, other than by reason of the expiration of a
term, the deputy chief shall assume the position of acting chief until
such time as a new fire chief is appointed and confirmed. If the duration
of the vacancy will be more than six months, the director, as promptly
as practicable, shall announce the date of the commencement of an
application period to fill the vacancy and complete the unexpired
term. Interested and qualified members of the department may apply
for the position in accordance with the procedures set forth in section
8-17 above, except that the referenced dates and time frames may be
adjusted by the director as appropriate for the filling of this vacancy.
The most recent chief appointment committee shall interview the candidates
and shall appoint a candidate to fill the vacancy, as set forth in
section 8-17. If the duration of the vacancy will be fewer than six
months, the acting chief shall remain in office until such time as
a new fire chief is appointed in the next election and appointment
cycle.
