The Village of Great Neck Estates has implemented backup and
disaster recovery appliances within their facility to provide proper
backup and disaster recovery options. The local appliance can perform
local virtualization of its servers excluding the VAX computer which
houses the legacy financials. This is a temporary virtualization option
should the server experience hardware failure and to provide time
to replace or fix. The appliance provides a secured co-location facility
site in which the local appliance replicates snapshot images of servers
off-site. The Village servers will replicate all its data and applications
to a server to this location through a secure high-speed internet
connection.
In the event of a catastrophe where the Village's Computer
Center is destroyed, or which prevents access to the servers, employees
of the Village will be able to access their data from other locations
if an internet connection is available. In order to accomplish this,
the last replicated backup image can be virtualized and enabled via
VPN connection to an off-site facility. This would be temporary, as
the Village procures, sets up or resolves issues related to hardware
or facility damage.
The Village policy also is to back up all of its Windows servers
locally and to a secure cloud facility located off-site. A secondary
location off-site serves as means of replication for the primary data
center. This includes all Village servers. All of these facilities
have backup appliances, and the data is replicated to the authorized
cloud service.
