Editor’s note–Printed herein is the charter of the City of Azle, Texas, as originally adopted on April 6, 1971, and as amended on April 2, 1983, May 5, 1990, and May 7, 2016. Apart from minor nonsubstantive changes in style and formatting, the charter is reproduced as it appeared in the 2001 Code of Ordinances. Capitalization, punctuation and grammar have been retained. Obviously misspelled words have been corrected without notation. Material enclosed in brackets has been added for clarification. Amendments to the charter are indicated by a history note following the amended provision. Proposition 17 of the election held May 7, 2016 made nonsubstantive, grammatical and textual corrections and made the language gender neutral. This proposition was incorporated herein without notation.

PREAMBLE
We, the Citizens of Azle, Texas, in order to establish a home rule municipal government, provide for the future progress of our City and obtain more fully the benefits of local self- government, do hereby adopt this Home Rule Charter in accordance with the statutes of the State of Texas; and do hereby declare the residents of the City of Azle in Tarrant and Parker Counties, Texas, living within the legally established boundaries of the said City, to be a political subdivision of the State of Texas incorporated forever under name and style of the “City of Azle” with such powers, rights and duties as are herein provided.
