Unless otherwise provided, whenever used in
the Code of the Village of Great Neck, the following terms shall have
the meanings indicated:
BUSINESS STREET
A municipal street adjoining property zoned primarily for
business, commercial, or industrial use.

COUNTY
The County of Nassau.

DRIVEWAY
A private road within the Village connecting a house, garage,
or other building with a street.

HERETOFORE and HEREAFTER
In any provision of any chapter of the Code of the Village
of Great Neck, relates to the time such provision takes effect.
HOLIDAY
Includes the following days in each year: the first day of
January, known as "New Year's Day"; the third Monday of January, known
as "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day"; the third Monday in February,
known as "Presidents’ Day"; the last Monday in May, known as
"Memorial Day"; the fourth day of July, known as "Independence Day";
the first Monday in September, known as "Labor Day"; the second Monday
in October, known as "Columbus Day"; the fourth Thursday in November,
known as "Thanksgiving Day"; the 25th day of December, known as "Christmas
Day"; and the Jewish Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah (two days) and Yom
Kippur.

MAYOR
The Mayor of the Village of Great Neck, and where a chapter
or section shall direct that an act be performed or decision be made
by the Mayor, such expression shall be deemed to include not only
the Mayor, but, in the absence of the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor, or
any member of the Board designated by the Board or the Mayor to perform
the act or exercise the discretion referred to. This provision shall
not be construed to authorize the Mayor or the Board to delegate any
power or duty on the part of the Mayor to any other person except
a member of the Board of Trustees of the Village of Great Neck, or
except as otherwise provided by law.
MUNICIPAL STREET
A street that a municipality owns and/or maintains on a regular
basis by deed, easement, acceptance of dedication, or prescription.
Municipal streets include Village streets.

PAVEMENT
With regard to streets, includes macadam, asphalt, brick,
concrete, or other similarly improved roadbed.

PERSON
Any individual, association, organization, partnership, firm,
corporation, or other entity recognized by law.

PRIVATE STREET
A street that is not a public street.

PROMENADE
A walkway open to the public required to be provided and
maintained by a resolution of the Village Board, the Village Planning
Board, or the Village Zoning Board of Appeals.

PUBLIC STREET
A street that the public has the right to use. Public streets
include municipal streets.

SIDEWALK
A sidewalk within or adjacent to a public street or that
the public otherwise has the right to use.

STATE
The State of New York.

STATE BUILDING CODE
All of the building, construction, electrical, energy, and
fire codes of the state.
STREET
A highway, boulevard, concourse, road, avenue, lane, alley,
court, cul-de-sac, drive, or thoroughfare within the Village more
than 20 feet in width, excluding, driveways.

VILLAGE
Whenever used without modifying words or qualifications,
the Incorporated Village of Great Neck, Nassau County, New York, and
the designation of any board, commission, committee, official or agency
shall mean that of the Incorporated Village of Great Neck, New York.
VILLAGE STREET
A street that the Village owns and/or maintains on a regular
basis by deed, easement, acceptance of dedication, or prescription.
