As used in this article, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated:
ACTIVE SOLAR ENERGY HEATING OR COOLING SYSTEM
Equipment which provides for the collection, transfer, storage and use of incident solar energy for water heating, space heating or cooling which, absent such solar energy system, would require a conventional energy resource, such as petroleum products, natural gas or electricity, and which meets standards established by regulation by the Secretary of the Office of Policy and Management.
HYBRID SYSTEM
Includes a solar energy heating or cooling system which consists of both active and passive elements.
OFFICE OF POLICY AND MANAGEMENT
Refers to a department in the executive branch of government of the State of Connecticut which is charged with the function of assisting and advising municipalities on matters of municipal finance.
PASSIVE ENERGY HEATING OR COOLING SYSTEM
The arrangement and design of the structural elements of a building to cause the collection, storage or distribution of energy within for water heating or space heating or cooling and which meets the standards established by regulation by the Secretary of the Office of Policy and Management.
SOLAR ENERGY ELECTRICITY GENERATING SYSTEM
Equipment which is designed, operated and installed as a system at any private residential location, which utilizes solar energy to produce electricity for consumption at such location and which meets standards established by regulation by the Secretary of the Office of Policy and Management.

The owner of any building in the Town of North Branford which is equipped with an active, passive or hybrid solar energy heating or cooling system or which has a solar energy electricity generating system installed for the generation of electricity for private residential use is hereby granted authorization to apply for an exemption from the building's assessment, pursuant to the provisions of Connecticut General Statutes § 12-81(56), (57) and (62). No exemption is allowed for any building or solar energy electrical generating system that commenced on or after October 1, 1991.[1]

Editor's Note: State statutes are very specific as to the time frame when solar energy exemptions were eligible for tax exemptions.
In each case, an exemption, if granted in accordance with the provisions of this article, shall be limited to the first 15 assessment years following the construction of such building or addition of such system to a building.
Any person who desires to claim the exemption provided in this article shall file with the Assessor of the Town of North Branford, within 30 days following the annual assessment date, written application claiming such exemption on a form as prescribed by the Secretary of the Office of Policy and Management. Failure to file such application in said manner and form within the time limit prescribed shall constitute a waiver of the right to such exemption for the assessment year.
