No person, except members of the Select Board
and other officers of the Town in the lawful performance of their
duties and those acting under their order, shall obstruct any sidewalk
or street, or any part thereof, or break or dig the ground of the
same without first obtaining a written license from the Select Board
thereof; and the person so licensed shall put and at all times keep
a suitable railing around the parts of any sidewalk or street so obstructed
or dug up as long as the same shall be unsafe or inconvenient for
travellers, and shall always keep as many lighted lanterns fixed to
such railing or fence every night from twilight in the evening through
the whole night as the Select Board may direct.
Whenever any sidewalk becomes obstructed or
made impassable by reason of the erecting or repairing of any building
or the doing of any work, the person doing or causing the same to
be done shall place a good convenient walk around such obstructions.
No person shall erect any canopy, awning, shade,
shade frame nor place or maintain a sign, show bill, lantern, show
board, goods, wares or other articles so as to rest on, project into
or overhang any street or sidewalk except in accordance with a permit
from the Select Board.
No owner, tenant or other person having control
of any building or premises shall permit a gate or door thereof to
swing open across any part of a sidewalk or street.
Whoever shall offend against or fail to comply with any of the provisions of this bylaw shall forfeit and pay a penalty of not more than $300 for each offense or be subject to noncriminal disposition of the offense pursuant to Chapter
1.
