The preamble to this ordinance read as follows: "WHEREAS the New York State
Education Department Division of State Archives and Records Administration
has mandated that all municipalities must adopt Records Retention and Disposition
Schedule MU-1 prior to April 30, 1989, and WHEREAS the City Clerk of the City
of Watertown, New York is hereby appointed the Records Retention Officer..."

The City Council of the City of Watertown, New York, adopts the Records
Retention and Disposition Schedule MU-1, issued pursuant to Article 57-A of
the Arts and Cultural Affairs Law, and containing legal minimum retention
periods for municipal government records, for use by all municipal officers
in disposing of municipal government records listed herein.
In accordance with Article 57-A of the Arts and Cultural Affairs Law:
A.
Only those records will be disposed of that are described
in Records Retention and Disposition Schedule MU-1, after they have met the
minimum retention period prescribed therein, and approved for disposition
by the Records Retention Officer.
B.
Only those records will be disposed of that do not have
sufficient administrative, fiscal, legal or historical value to merit retention
beyond the established time periods.
