The following projections may be permitted over
a street beyond the street line when approved by the Village Board
of Trustees:
A. Areaways, immediately outside the building and enclosed
by substantial walls, not more than three feet, provided that every
such areaway shall be covered over at the street level by an approved
grating of metal or other incombustible material of sufficient strength
to carry safely the pedestrian street traffic.
B. Balustrades of an ornamental character, including
the sills and brackets on which they rest, moldings, belt courses,

feet above the sidewalk level.
C. Permanent awnings, canopies and marquees, extending
across the sidewalk, but in no case nearer than two feet to the curb,
in connection with entrances to buildings, not less than eight feet
above the sidewalk at all points for awnings and canopies and not

that they shall be constructed of iron and glass or other incombustible
materials and securely supported from the building and are properly
drained; provided, further, that no awning, canopy or marquee shall
extend along the street wall of a building for more than 75% of the
length of such wall nor, in any case, more than 50 feet and that there

purposes, it shall be considered a "canopy" for the purposes of this
chapter.

character extending wholly or in part across the sidewalk and not
less than seven feet above the sidewalk at all points, provided that
they shall be securely supported from the building and shall not extend
along the street wall of any building for more than 30 feet and that
there shall be a clear distance of not less than two feet between
any two such semipermanent awnings.

the Village Board of Trustees before any of the projections mentioned
in the preceding section may be built, constructed, hung or erected.
Such permit may be granted upon such terms and conditions as the Village
Board of Trustees may fix and may be revoked at any time at the option
of the Village Board of Trustees. When so revoked, the projections
affected shall be removed by the owners within the time limit stipulated
by the Village Board of Trustees.
No alterations or enlargements shall be made
to any existing part of a building now projecting beyond the street
line, except in conformity with the provisions of this chapter so
far as it affects new construction.
Such parts of buildings which have, since March
18, 1946, projected beyond the street line may be maintained as constructed
until their removal is directed by the Village Board of Trustees.
