The survey, plan and system for the numbering of houses and buildings as prepared by the Hilltown Township Engineer, dated September 11, 1970, and as subsequently amended by Hilltown Township, is hereby approved and adopted as amended, and made a part of this chapter.
As used in this chapter, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated:
BUILDING
Any structure used or intended to be used as a dwelling or place of business or industry, and shall include any public buildings, religious and institutional buildings.
A. 
Within 60 days after the enactment of this chapter, it shall be the duty of each and every owner, trustee, lessee, agent and/or occupant of each and every building within the Township of Hilltown to cause the same to be numbered in accordance with this chapter, and the system and plan as hereby adopted and approved.
B. 
Notice of violation. The Board of Supervisors or any officer or employee of the Township designated thereby for the purpose is hereby authorized to give written notice, by personal service or by United States Mail, to the owner or occupant, as the case may be, of any premises whereupon the address identification number at the premises is not posted as required by the provisions of this chapter, directing and requiring such owner or occupant to post the address identification number so as to conform to the requirements of this chapter within 15 days after issuance of such notice. In case any owner, owners or occupants shall neglect, fail or refuse to comply with such notice within the period of time stated herein, the Township authorities may post a street number on the premises and collect the cost thereof, together with any additional penalty authorized by law, from such owner, owners or occupant in the manner provided by law.

A. 
The assigned number shall be placed upon the mailbox, building or other conspicuous place, the same number to be of paint, metal or enamel, and at least three inches in height, the color of the numbers to be in contrast to the immediate background, and shall be placed so as to be in full view from the opposite side of the street, in accordance with the following design:
(1) 
For buildings with identifiable mailboxes, the numbers shall be placed on the mailbox.
(2) 
For those buildings visible from the street but without mailboxes, the numbers shall be placed in a conspicuous place on or over each front door, on the front transom bar, front transom glass or front show window.
(3) 
For those buildings without mailboxes and not visible from the street, the number shall be placed at the end of each private road or driveway serving such building or structure, and at the entrance to any private lane or driveway off of a main road or driveway serving said building or structure upon a permanent standard, base or support.
B. 
The Hilltown Township Zoning Officer is hereby authorized to require the numbering and renumbering of any building or structure in accordance with this chapter.
It shall be unlawful to cover any house number with any sign, drapery, or other obstruction tending to conceal such number and all old numbers shall be removed from any building or structure whenever a new number has been assigned by the Township.
Any person who violates or permits a violation of this chapter shall, upon conviction in a summary proceeding brought before a District Justice under the Pennsylvania Rules of Criminal Procedure, be guilty of a summary offense and shall be punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000, plus costs of prosecution. In default of payment thereof, the defendant may be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 90 days. Each day or portion thereof that such violation continues or is permitted to continue shall constitute a separate offense, and each section of this chapter that is violated shall also constitute a separate offense.
