The man-made or man-induced alteration of the chemical, physical,
biological and radiological integrity of water.
POTW
Publicly owned pretreatment works defined as follows: the
treatment works as defined by 33 U.S.C. § 1292 which is
owned by a state or municipality [as defined by 33 U.S.C. § 1362(4)].
This definition includes any sewers that convey wastewater to the
POTW treatment plant. For the purposes of this chapter, "POTW" shall
also include any sewers which convey wastewater from the town to a
POTW and POTW treatment plants owned by others.
PRETREATMENT
The reduction of the amount of pollutant properties in wastewater
to a less harmful state prior to or in lieu of discharging or otherwise
introducing such pollutants into a POTW. The reduction or alteration
can be obtained by physical, chemical or biological processes, process
changes or by other means, except as prohibited by 40 CFR 403.6, General
Pretreatment Regulations for Existing and New Sources of Pollution.
RECEIVING WATERS
Any watercourse, river, pond, ditch aquifer or other body
of surface or subsurface water receiving the discharge of sewage.
SANITARY SEWAGE
A combination of water-carried wastes which are similar in
origin and strength to those typically produced in households, including
wastewater from bathrooms, lavatories, toilets, kitchens and laundries.
SANITARY SEWER
A sewer which carries sewage and to which storm-, surface
and ground waters are not intentionally admitted.
SEPTIC TANK WASTE
A combination of the liquid- and water-carried waste from
residential, commercial, industrial and institutional septic systems,
