There is hereby created the position of special law enforcement
officers in the Borough of Edgewater, pursuant to the provisions of
N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146.10.
No person shall be appointed as a special law enforcement officer
unless he/she is a citizen of the United States; at least 18 years
of age; able to read, write and speak the English language well and
intelligently and has a high school diploma or its equivalent; is
physically qualified in body and of good health; is of good moral
character; and has not been convicted of any criminal offense involving
dishonest or moral turpitude; and has successfully undergone the same
psychological testing of its full-time police officers in the municipality.
Every person seeking appointment as a special law enforcement
officer shall make application to the Mayor and Council, which body
shall have exclusive jurisdiction over the final determination of
the applicant's qualifications.
No special law enforcement officers classified as Class I shall
carry a revolver or other weapon when on or off duty.

The assignments of special law enforcement officers shall be
to perform such assignments in accordance with N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146.11a(1),
Class One, in the Borough of Edgewater as determined by the Chief
of Police and/or Police Director. Special law enforcement officers
shall have the power to issue summonses in accordance with N.J.S.A.
40A:14-146.11a(1), Class One.
Salaries for special law enforcement officers are set forth
by salary ordinance and will be paid in accordance with the salary
ordinance in existence at the time of officer's appointment.
