There is hereby created in the Village of Sagaponack the office
of Village Constable.

The Mayor with the consent of the Board of Trustees shall appoint
as many Constables as he shall determine to be necessary. Such Constables
shall be organized as a Village Constabulary, as shall be determined
by the Village Board of Trustees.
All Constables shall be peace officers as defined in § 2.10
of the Criminal Procedure Law of New York and are authorized to exercise
such powers incumbent upon such office as are described in § 2.20
of the Criminal Procedure Law of New York.
The Mayor is authorized to make rules and regulations as may
be required for the efficient administration of such Constabulary
and shall also provide, within the limits of any appropriation which
subject to any later enacted amendatory local law shall not exceed
$150,000 per fiscal year and subject to the approval of the Board
of Trustees:
A. A training program for Constables which shall be in cooperation with
any police agency or the Sheriff's office.
B. Liability insurance for such Constables which shall protect the Constables
and Village from acts of liability that may arise during the performance
of duties as Constables.
C. Workers' compensation, accidental injury insurance, disability
insurance or life insurance as shall be agreed between the Constables
and the Village.
D. For the payment of Constables for services rendered and provide for
the assignment of Constables to duty.
E. Uniforms and equipment for Constables as may be necessary or desirable
to carry out the duties of the office.
F. Authorization for the carrying of firearms only when trained to the
minimum standards required of police officers as defined in § 1.20(34)
of the Criminal Procedure Law of New York.
G. An annual physical examination, the successful completion of which
shall occur prior to any appointment or reappointment.
