There is hereby created and established the position of Surgeon
in and for the Police and Fire Divisions, who shall be two in number
and who shall be appointed by the Director of the Division of Public
Safety. The Surgeons shall serve for a term of one year.
The duties of the Surgeons to the Police and Fire Divisions
shall be as follows:
A. To examine newly appointed policemen and firemen to determine their
fitness.
B. To give physical and medical examinations to the members of the Police
and Fire Divisions at such time and when so directed by the Director
of the Division of Public Safety.
C. To make recommendations relating to continued service examinations
of policemen and firemen about to retire.
D. To render first aid to policemen and firemen who are injured in the
line of service, assign them to hospitals, visit them in the hospital
and give post-hospital medical attention.
E. To examine policemen and firemen returning to active service from
sick leave.
F. To keep needed medical and other records and files and perform such
medical work of a professional nature among the members of the Police
and Fire Divisions as directed by the Director of the Division of
Public Safety and make themselves available 24 hours a day in cases
of emergency.
G. To perform any and all other duties commensurate with their office
when required so to do by the Director of the Division of Public Safety
or the Chiefs of the Police and Fire Divisions, respectively.
