There is hereby established a permanent Farmland and Forestry Preservation Committee. The Committee shall consist of five regular members and three alternate members, all of whom shall be electors of the Town appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the Town Council, for terms of four years in accordance with Chapter VII of the Town Charter. All regular and alternate members shall serve without compensation. One of the initial regular members and one alternate member shall serve for one year, and three regular members and one alternate member shall serve for two years and one regular member shall serve for three years. Thereafter regular and alternate members shall serve four-year terms. The Committee shall meet monthly, adopt rules and regulations for the conduct of its meetings, shall elect a Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary on an annual basis and may promulgate and adopt bylaws.

The Committee's purpose is to promote the preservation, protection and maintenance of farmland and forest land and to foster and assist sustainable agricultural activity.

The Committee shall:
(a) 
Identity and inventory farmland and forest land located within the Town of New Milford by using available public maps, records, data and other information as to the location and size of such lands;
(b) 
Gather, update and maintain anecdotal and empirical information from available state and federal agencies, determine the economic viability and state of working farms and make proposals and recommendations to the Town Council and Economic Development Commission on promoting, maintaining and improving such activity in the Town of New Milford;
(c) 
Identify available state and federal programs and grants and obtain assistance from state and federal agencies to preserve farm and forest lands.
