The naming of a government building or any part thereof shall
require a 2/3 vote of the Town Council for approval.
The Chairperson of the Town Council shall appoint an ad hoc
naming committee made up of three Town Council members.
The ad hoc naming committee will accept suggestions in writing
from any interested members of the community. Such suggestions shall
be accompanied by biographical material and a list of achievements
which justify special recognition on the basis of distinguished service.
Whenever a government building or part thereof is to be named
for an individual, one of the following criteria shall be met:
A. The individual shall be a prominent national or statewide figure
whose name and reputation are widely known and accepted.
B. The individual shall have been involved over a long period of time
with the Town of Southington in general or the government in particular
and shall have successfully exhibited demonstrably distinguished service
deserving of special recognition.
C. The individual under consideration shall be deceased for a period
of not less than five years.
After completion of the deliberations, the ad hoc naming committee
shall present a list of no more than three names to the Town Manager,
who will forward it to the Town Council.
The Town Council shall then make the final selection of one
name from the list submitted by the committee.
The Town Council may waive any provision above with an affirmative
vote of seven members of the Council.
