Choose a convenient shady spot with good drainage that will accommodate a pile of at least three feet on a side and shall be at least 50 feet from any dwelling.
The addition of food waste is prohibited in a compost pile on any lot smaller than one acre. Food wastes which should not be composted on any lot include meat, bones and fatty food wastes such as cheese, grease and oils.
Dog or cat litter and diseased plants should not be composted.
Guidelines for backyard composting as set by the Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Solid Waste Management, should be followed.
