A smoke detector device must meet or exceed Underwriters Laboratory
standard number 217 effective July 5, 1977 as amended and able when
installed at locations required to provide not less than level 4 protection
as defined in the National Fire Protection Association's publication
number 74 designated ANSI Se 3.14-1976 effective April 15, 1976 designated
household fire warning equipment. The smoke detector must have a self-contained
power supply, and must be capable of emitting an audible signal of
at least 85 decibels at a range of 10 feet.
A smoke detector device shall always be installed on ceilings,
but never closer than 12 inches from corners of interior walls. Such
installation shall be in the following areas:
A. At the top of staircases;
B. Outside the doorways of sleeping areas;
C. Between sleeping areas and potential fire sources (i.e., kitchens,
heating units); and
D. At least on each level of a structure even though that level may
not contain a dwelling unit.
