A department of emergency and safety services is hereby created, the department head of which shall be the director of emergency and safety services.

The director of emergency and safety services shall be appointed by the mayor with the advice and consent of the council. The director shall be qualified and have the necessary experience to manage all aspects of said department and shall be compensated as provided by the council in the annual salary ordinance.

The director of emergency and safety services shall be responsible for the office of emergency management, bureau of fire safety, housing inspection bureau, Princeton fire department, safety compliance for Princeton and liaison with emergency medical services. The director of emergency and safety services shall be responsible for the following as set forth in the position's job description:
(a) 
Princeton Fire Safety Inspection Unit and Housing Unit. Oversee the annual development and maintenance of a work plan for the operations of the bureau including personnel, equipment and facilities. Manage the fire official and housing inspection manager to ensure compliance regarding regulations consistent with nationally recognized good practice and enforcement of New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and local Fire Code ordinances, the New Jersey Housing Code and Local Housing Code ordinances.
(b) 
Emergency Management. Responsible for coordination of services and planning with the local emergency services, police department, health department, public schools, colleges and universities and community groups.
(c) 
Manage fire department operations including oversight of the budget, maintenance programs, purchasing, records management, grant programs, training and supervision of fire line officers and responsibility for the overall management of fire department administration and operations.
(d) 
Responsible for overseeing the employee safety committee and coordinating safety compliance with all municipal departments. Act as the safety representative for Princeton on the joint insurance fund.
(e) 
Other related work as assigned by the Princeton administrator.
