The Fire Chief may call for help from other fire departments
when, in his opinion, it is necessary.

For the purposes of participating in the benefits provided in
Code of Virginia, §§ 15.1-136.1 through 15.1-136.7,
it is hereby recognized that the volunteer firefighters of the Town
are an integral part of the official safety program of the Town.

Pursuant to Code of Virginia, §§ 27-40.1 and
27-40.1:1, provision for physical examinations for the volunteer firefighters
of the Town shall be authorized as follows:
(a) A physical examination shall be provided for all volunteer firefighters
of the Town to include:
(b) Such physical examinations shall be conducted by any licensed physician
as designated by the Town Manager.
(c) Such examinations shall be at the expense of the Town.

Pursuant to Code of Virginia § 40.1-79.1, as amended,
and subject to any restrictions that may be adopted by the Abingdon
Fire Department, any person who is 16 years of age or older, with
parental or legal guardian approval, in writing, is authorized to
work with and/or participate fully in all activities of the Abingdon
Fire Department, including but not limited to the taking of training
classes provided by the Virginia Department of Fire Programs, provided
such person has or is participating in a training program to attain
certification under National Fire Protection Association 1001, Level
One, Fire Fighter Standards, as administered by the Virginia Department
of Fire Programs. The certification record and parental or legal guardian
consent shall be kept on file in the office of the Abingdon Fire Department
for each participant who is enrolled pursuant to this section.
