The animal control officer is authorized to impound the following animals:
A. 
Any animal running at large;
B. 
Any animal kept in violation of this title;
C. 
Any known or suspected rabid animal;
D. 
Any animal which has bitten any person;
E. 
Any potentially vicious animal as set forth in Chapter 7.46;
F. 
Any vicious animal as set forth in Chapter 7.48.

The animal control officer shall, when possible, confine any animal impounded in the animal control center.

The animal control officer shall notify the owner, if known, of the impoundment of any animal pursuant to this chapter and Chapter 7.44. Notice of such impoundment may be given orally or by mail.

The period of impoundment shall be that period imposed by the police chief.

The owner of any animal impounded may, at any time before the disposition thereof, redeem the same from the animal control center upon the payment of all fees and charges required by the animal control center; provided, that the owner provides proof that any license required by Chapter 7.16 of this code has been obtained.

A. 
In the event the owner of an unlicensed dog redeems that animal, he or she shall agree in writing, prior to the release of the animal by the animal control center, to obtain the proper vaccination for the animal, within 10 days of such release, and submit the same to the animal control officer.
B. 
The department of finance shall, upon the return of the vaccination certificate, issue the license after the application is properly completed in accordance with Section 7.16.020 of this code.
C. 
In the event the owner fails to return with the vaccination certificate to obtain the license, the animal control officer shall reimpound the animal.

In the event that the period of impoundment has run without redemption, the animal control center may sell, destroy or otherwise dispose of such animal.
