No person shall be appointed a probationary or regular member of the
Department unless he or she has first made proper application and has been
examined as prescribed in the rules and regulations relating to appointment.
No person shall be appointed to the Department unless he:
A. Possesses the qualifications for appointment provided
by law.
B. Has never been convicted of any crime of moral turpitude.
C. Complies with the requirements of this article.
Any person appointed to the Department shall be first appointed as a
probationary fire fighter to serve for a probationary period of one year.
During such year, probationary fire fighters shall obey all the provisions
of this chapter and of the rules and regulations. Probationary fire fighters
shall not be entitled to enjoy the benefits of tenure of office as provided
in N.J.S.A. 40A:14-17 and 40A:14-19, as amended. If at any time during the
probationary year the Township Manager shall determine that a probationary
fire fighter does not possess the proper ability, aptitude, character or physical
fitness for regular membership in the Department, he or she shall dismiss
such probationary fire fighter. Such dismissal shall terminate the services
of the probationary fire fighter in the Department.
At the completion of the probationary period, the Chief shall submit
a written report to the Township Manager, stating in detail the qualifications
of the probationary fire fighter for appointment as a regular member of the
Department and his or her recommendations. The probationary fire fighter shall
furnish to the Township Manager evidence that his or her physical condition
satisfies the requirements relating to qualifications for appointment as a
regular member of the Department.
Any deception or attempt at deception by an applicant in the application
or in any phase of his or her candidacy shall be cause for rejection or for
dismissal if discovered after appointment.
Upon appointment as a probationary fire fighter and as a regular member
of the Department, every appointee shall subscribe to and take the oath of
office prescribed by law.
