Special police, deputy police and civilian employees
appointed under the provisions of this chapter shall not be members
of the Department. They shall not be entitled to participate in the
Police Pension Fund or to receive the benefits of tenure of office
as provided in N.J.S.A. 40A:14-128 and 40A:14-147, as amended.
The Manager, upon recommendation of the Chief,
may appoint for one-year terms citizens of the Township to be known
as "deputy police" and to serve as a police reserve. The police reserve
may be utilized in such emergencies as the Chief may determine, and,
in addition thereto, in such other situations as to which the Manager
gives final approval and authority for the use of such services. While
on duty, such deputy police may perform the duties of and shall have
the powers of members of the Department. Deputy police shall take
the oath of office prescribed for members of the Department. They
shall wear an authorized badge at all times while on duty. Deputy
police shall serve without pay unless otherwise ordered by the Township
Council.
When authorized by the Manager, the Chief may
employ persons to work under the direction of the Police Department.
Such persons shall perform duties as may be directed by the Chief,
and they shall be paid by the Township in accordance with the Salary
Ordinance.
