Owners of privately owned buildings located
on private drives shall cooperate with the Village in the placement
of a sign by the Village that identifies the street number(s) of such
buildings within the public right-of-way abutting such private drives.
[Amended 6-24-2002]
Any street number sign required under §
243-9 shall meet the following requirements, except where, for reasons of potential confusion, uniqueness of location or other compelling public safety reasons, the Village Board authorizes a variance from the requirements of Subsection A, B or E (only in regard to compliance with the design criteria for Exhibit A), provided the owners of all buildings accessed by the
private drive have, by a majority vote where a legally recognized
homeowner's association does not exist, made a timely request for
a variance, in writing. If a homeowner's association exists, a vote
consistent with the governing documents for the homeowner's association
shall control.
A. The sign must identify the street numbers of all buildings
located on the abutting private drive. The numerals posted on the
sign shall be at least 2 1/2 inches but not more than four inches
in height.
B. When a sign identifies the building address numbers
for multiple buildings, the sign shall have each building address
number listed in numerical order except when the sign pertains to
a condominium in which case only the lowest and highest building address
may be used.
C. The sign shall be placed within the public right-of-way
at the intersection of the private drive to such public right-of-way
at a location proximate to that intersection such that the sign is
clearly legible from the public highway. Owners of any building identified
by the sign may make a recommendation to the Village concerning the
actual point of installation.
D. The sign shall bear the words "private drive."
E. The building owner(s) may choose the configuration
of the sign, subject to the specifications set forth in this section
and attached Exhibit A, of all the buildings on a private drive. At the time of
the initial installation of a sign under this article, a majority
of the owner(s) of all the buildings on a private drive, where a legally
recognized homeowner's association does not exist, may elect to place
a "drive name" on the sign by making a written request to the Village.
If a homeowner's association exists, a vote consistent with the governing
documents for the homeowner's association shall control.
The owner(s) of private drives shall notify
the Village if the posted sign has become unreadable, in disrepair,
in need of replacement, or has been removed from its originally installed
location.
