There is hereby established a committee to be
known as the "Street Name Review Committee of the Township of Freehold."
The Committee shall consist of seven members
appointed by the Township Committee. All of them shall be residents
of the Township. Two members shall be members in good standing of
a Township Volunteer Fire Department; one from each Fire District
who shall be recommended to the Township Committee by the Board of
Fire Commissioners of each district. One member shall be a police
officer of the Township of Freehold to be recommended to the Township
Committee by the Chief of Police. Two members shall be members of
the Planning Board to be recommended to the Township Committee by
the Chairperson of the Planning Board. Two members shall be from the
general public. The terms of office of all members except the public
members shall be for one year. Public members shall serve for a period
of three years. The initial term of the public members shall commence
upon appointment and shall be staggered so that one member's term
expires on January 1 following the appointment and one member's term
expires one year from January 1 following the appointment. Thereafter,
subsequent appointments shall be for two year periods. Any vacancy
occurring shall be filled by the Township Committee for the unexpired
term. All Committee members shall serve without compensation. In January
of each year, the members of the Committee shall designate one of
their numbers to serve as Chairperson and the presiding officer.
The purpose of the Street Name Review Committee
is to assist the Township Committee and the Planning Board in naming
streets, existing and proposed. In doing so, the Committee shall study
and review existing streets as well as all applications pending and
all applications submitted to the Planning Board for the creation
of new streets. The Committee shall provide the Township Committee
and/or the Planning Board, as the case may be, with written reports
recommending proposed names or changes in same. The Street Name Review
Committee shall be guided in its responsibilities according to the
following standards and considerations:
A. The historic significance of the area where the street
is located.
B. The confusion engendered by similar sounding or looking
names.
C. Ease and convenience to the traveling public.
D. The ability of emergency vehicles to locate an address
with maximum promptness.
