"An annual election shall be held in each Village
on the third Tuesday in [March] June, [except that in
any Village in Suffolk or Nassau county which has heretofore elected
its officers on the third Tuesday in June or has heretofore adopted
a resolution to elect its officers on the day specified or which has
adopted a proposition as herein provided to hold its annual election
on the third Tuesday in June, such Villages may elect and continue
to elect its officers on that day and] except that Villages which
shall have provided that the term of mayor and trustees shall be four
years may adopt a resolution providing that elections shall be held
biennially and thereafter an election shall be held biennially except
that in the event the term of any elected official in office at the
time of the adoption of the resolution shall expire in a year which
would require an election to be held in a year other than that prescribed
by the resolution which by its terms requires biennial elections,
an election shall be held in such year, and there shall be elected
to such office a successor of such official for a term to commence
upon the expiration of the term of such incumbent, and to end at noon
on the first Monday in the month following the Village election in
the fifth calendar year following, and the successors of such officials
so elected shall be elected for terms of four official years. [A Village
of the third or fourth class may by the adoption at an annual or special
election of a proposition therefor, hold its annual election on the
third Tuesday in June.]"
