A. 
Smoke detectors shall be installed in an approved manner in all residential units within the Borough of Greenville. "Smoke detector" means, for the purpose of this chapter, a device which detects visible or invisible particles of combustion.
B. 
Residential units shall include single-family dwelling units, condominium units, duplex units, apartment units or other separate units occupied in whole or in part for residential use purposes.
C. 
Where required, all residential units within the limits of the Borough of Greenville shall be equipped with a minimum of one functional, properly located, labeled and listed, smoke detector as described in the National Fire Protection Association Standard 74. As a minimum requirement, at least one smoke detector shall be installed in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and at least one additional detector shall be installed on each additional story of the family living unit including basement and excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics.
D. 
Installation. All equipment shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's installation requirements and recommendations. If the method of installation is not specified by the manufacturer, the smoke detector shall be installed on the ceiling, not less than six inches from any wall or on a wall not less than six inches nor more than 12 inches from the ceiling. No detector shall be recessed into the ceiling or a wall.
E. 
Power supply. Each smoke detector may be powered by an AC power source or a battery.
(1) 
If the detector is solely AC powered and the manufacturer does not supply specifications as to its installation, it shall be directly attached to a junction box not controlled by any switch other than the main power supply.
(2) 
Installation of AC-powered smoke detectors shall conform to all electrical standards adopted by NFPA.[1]

A smoke detector required under this section shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements and recommendations. If the manufacturer recommendations and requirements conflict with any county or local electrical standard, the county or local electrical standard shall take precedence.
F. 
Installation time limit. Every dwelling unit required to have smoke detectors installed herein have the same installed within 12 months from the date of passage of this chapter. Where smoke alarms exist in residential units, the warranty for the alarm and/or battery shall be with the manufacturer.
G. 
Maintenance and tests. No person shall tamper with or remove any smoke detector, except when it is necessary for maintenance inspection purposes. Any smoke detector removed for repair, replacement or local remodeling shall be reinstalled or replaced so that it is operable and in place during normal sleeping hours.
A. 
Enforcement of this chapter shall be carried out by the Code Enforcement Office and/or the Greenville Fire Department. Inspections and enforcement thereafter shall occur at such times as either department is called out to assess a fire call or to make a building inspection.
B. 
In the event a violation is revealed by inspection as aforesaid, the Borough shall notify the homeowner of the violation and said owner shall have the period of 15 days to correct the violation. If the violation is not corrected within that fifteen-day period, then the owner shall be subject to prosecution therefor.

Any person, firm or corporation who shall violate any provision of this chapter shall be, upon conviction thereof, sentenced to pay a fine of not less than $25 nor more than $1,000 plus costs and, in default of payment of said fine and costs, to a term of imprisonment not to exceed 30 days. Each day that a violation of this chapter continues shall constitute a separate offense.
