The office of Tax Assessor is hereby created and established in and for the Township of Hillsborough pursuant to N.J.R.S. 40A:9-146 et seq.
The Tax Assessor shall, as a condition of eligibility for appointment and for continuance of office, be the holder of a New Jersey tax assessor certificate issued pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 44 of the Laws of New Jersey, 1967,[1] and the amendments and supplements thereto.

The Tax Assessor shall be appointed by the Township Committee for a term of four years from the first day of July next following his appointment.
The Tax Assessor shall receive such compensation as is limited by the Salary Ordinance[1] and set by resolution, as both may be amended from time to time.

The Tax Assessor shall be responsible for the making of all assessments of taxable property within the Township of Hillsborough. Said duties of the Tax Assessor shall include the following:
A. 
Familiarization with electrodata processing and with tax roll and tax duplicate of Hillsborough Township to the end that he may maintain a proper tax equalization program throughout the Township.
B. 
Maintaining office hours in the Municipal Building as designated by resolution of the Township Committee after conferring with the Tax Assessor.
C. 
Preparing for the defense of all tax appeals and participating therein.
D. 
Performing all duties in connection with the establishing of the proper equalized assessment of all taxable property within the Township of Hillsborough.
Vacancies other than due to expiration of term shall be filled by appointment for the unexpired term.
