In the event of an emergency, any police officer
of the Borough of Alpha, Township of Greenwich, Town of Phillipsburg,
Township of Pohatcong or of the New Jersey State Police, acting in
the performance of his duties, may request of the Chief of Police
or any police officer on duty in this township, police assistance
in the Borough of Alpha, Township of Greenwich, Town of Phillipsburg
or Township of Pohatcong.
A.
Police of the township may, upon such request in the
event of emergency, respond to the request and render police assistance
in the Borough of Alpha, Township of Greenwich, Town of Phillipsburg
or Township of Pohatcong. Police of this township shall not be obligated
to respond to such request for assistance, and shall not respond if,
in their judgment and discretion, responding would jeopardize public
safety in this township.
B.
Any police officer of this township responding to
such request and rendering police assistance in the Borough of Alpha,
Township of Greenwich, Town of Phillipsburg or Township of Pohatcong
shall:
(1)
While engaged in such assistance, have such rights
and immunities as he may otherwise enjoy in the performance of his
normal duties in this township; and
(2)
If he suffers a casualty or death while engaged in
such assistance, be entitled to all salary, pension rights, workers
compensation and other benefits to which such officer would be entitled
if such casualty or death occurred in the performance of his normal
duties in this township.
Upon passage and effective date of a reciprocal
ordinance by the Borough of Alpha, Township of Greenwich, Town of
Phillipsburg or Township of Pohatcong, there shall exist an agreement
between this township and such borough, town and townships for the
provision of mutual police aid in case of emergency upon the terms
and contained in this article and such reciprocal ordinance. Such
agreement may be terminated at any time by repeal of this or such
other reciprocal ordinances or may be altered by other reciprocal
ordinance provisions adopted by the four municipalities.
This article shall take effect immediately upon
its final passage and publication in accordance with law; provided,
however, that if the reciprocal ordinance of the Borough of Alpha,
Township of Greenwich, Town of Phillipsburg and Township of Pohatcong
are not effective until a later date, then this article shall become
effective on such later effective date of the reciprocal ordinances
of said Borough of Alpha, Township of Greenwich, Town of Phillipsburg
and Township of Pohatcong.
